The CASAT Learning 30-Hour Advanced Problem Gambling Course is a  comprehensive training program designed to equip you with the advanced knowledge and skills required to address the complexities of gambling disorder and its co-occurring issues. Developed in collaboration with the Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling with funding provided by the State of Nevada DHHS, DBPH, Bureau of Behavioral Health Wellness and Prevention | Problem Gambling, this course fulfills 30 hours of the educational requirements to apply for certification as a problem gambling counselor through the Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug, and Gambling Counselors.

Throughout the course, you will explore multiple pathways to recovery, examining the intersection of gambling disorder with the criminal justice system and learning to engage in both peer and prevention work. We’ll dive into the complexities of assessment and screening, including accurate diagnosis (DX) and Level of Care (LOC) placement. Special emphasis will be placed on Evidence-Based Practices (EBP), ethics in the digital age, and approaches to working with specific populations, with a focus on respectful engagement.

You will also explore the convergence of gaming and gambling, as well as the unique considerations for populations affected by sensory perception disorders, trauma, intimate partner violence, and suicide risk. The course will also provide insights into working with military personnel and veterans, recognizing their unique needs and experiences in relation to gambling and recovery. Furthermore, we will discuss the emerging field of financial therapy, a vital component in helping clients navigate the financial challenges that often accompany problem gambling.

Through interactive video sessions, real-world case studies, expert instruction, and comprehension assessments, you will deepen your understanding of the ethical and clinical considerations essential for competent and compassionate care. We are confident that by the end of this course, you will be fully prepared to make a meaningful impact in the field of problem gambling treatment.

Learning Objectives 

  • Examine Recovery Pathways and Systems Involvement – Analyze multiple pathways to recovery, including the intersection of gambling disorder with the criminal justice system, and explore strategies for engaging in peer and prevention work.
  • Apply Assessment and Screening Techniques – Develop competency in assessment and screening processes, including accurate diagnosis (DX) and Level of Care (LOC) placement, to support appropriate treatment planning.
  • Implement Evidence-Based and Ethical Practices – Evaluate and apply Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) and ethical considerations in the digital age while employing approaches that prioritize Respectful Engagement when working with various populations.
  • Address Co-Occurring Factors and Special Populations – Investigate the convergence of gaming and gambling, as well as the unique considerations for individuals affected by sensory perception disorders, trauma, intimate partner violence, suicide risk, and military service.
  • Explore Financial Therapy in Gambling Recovery – Assess the role of financial therapy in addressing the economic challenges associated with problem gambling and develop strategies to support clients in financial recovery.

The course is available through the CASAT Learning platform and is open to anyone seeking to apply to become a Certified Problem Gambling counselor in Nevada. This “advanced” course is meant to be taken during internship.
